Seven Questions to Ask Before an ERP Implementation

An ERP system brings inventory, orders, finance and reporting into one place. Done well, it removes duplicate work and gives everyone the same numbers. Done badly, it becomes an expensive spreadsheet. These questions help you start well.

1. What problem are we actually solving?

Name the pain: stock that does not match the books, month-end taking two weeks, orders getting lost. Success is then measurable.

2. Which processes must it support on day one?

Trying to cover everything at once is the classic mistake. Choose the core flows first and phase the rest.

3. Off the shelf, configured or custom?

Established platforms suit standard processes. Custom pieces are worth it where your way of working is a real advantage.

4. What about our existing data?

Customer, product and balance data usually needs cleaning before it is moved. Allow time for it.

5. Who on our side owns the project?

Every successful implementation has an internal owner with the authority to decide and the time to answer questions.

6. How will people be trained?

The best system fails if the team avoids it. Plan training, simple guides and a period of close support after go-live.

7. How will we know it worked?

Agree the measures in advance: faster closing, fewer stock errors, quicker order processing. Review them at 30, 90 and 180 days.
